Payer mix is the distribution of revenue or volume by payer category, such as commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, self-pay, and other government programs. Because reimbursement rates and administrative requirements vary widely by payer, payer mix has a direct effect on operating margin, service line strategy, access planning, and contracting priorities. A shift from commercial to government payers can materially change the economics of the same clinical volume.
